Tesla’s Model 3 was unveiled Thursday at a special event in San Francisco.
The sedan is the most affordable of Tesla’s range so far and has a 215-mile range per charge (slightly less than the high-end Model S and Model X).
Elon Musk, the electric car company’s founder, has also said he will double the number of public superchargers from 3,600 to 7,200 by the end of 2017.
Deliveries begin late 2017 and within 24 hours, more than 115,000 customers have placed a pre-order.
The starting price is $35,000—before federal and state government incentives—which is less than half the cost of Tesla’s earlier models.
Features of the Model 3 include:
- 0 to 60 in under 6 seconds
- Seats 5 adults
- Contains two trunks
- 5-star safety rating
- Autopilot safety features
At the unveiling event in Hawthorne, Calif., Musk stressed his reasoning for pushing the technology forward: “It’s because it’s very important to accelerate the transition to sustainable transport. This is really important for the future of the world.”
