The NCAA is backing off implementing its $2,000 miscellaneous expense allowance to student athletes after at least 125 schools called for an override. The legislation was voted on by the board of directors in October, but was shrouded in controversy as a form of payment to student-athletes.
The schools’ reasons for disapproval, listed on the NCAA website, included how quickly the rule was passed, competitive equity, and issues involving Title IX.
“Based on conversations I have had, I am confident that there remains a very high level of support for this permissive legislation to provide better support for our student athletes,” NCAA President Mark Emmert said on the NCAA website.
The NCAA Board of Directors will meet again in January to discuss change. They are optimistic they can ratify a new rule that all schools can agree on.
