NATO Supply Plane Crash Near Kabul

[xtypo_dropcap]A[/xtypo_dropcap] cargo plane believed to be carrying supplies for U.S. led NATO operations crashed into the mountains near the Afghan capital Kabul the night of Tuesday, October 12, killing all eight crew members, according to officials.

The plane had taken off from the U.S. operated military base Bagram, 40 miles north of Kabul, according to AFP.

The plane disappeared from radar at 7:25 p.m. local time (14:55 GMT), six miles from Kabul airport, crashing 16-18 miles from the airport, an airport official told AFP.

Air traffic control could see the flames that enveloped the plane and continued to burn for two hours.

Rescue operations were carried out by NATO and Afghan forces, and the international security assistance force (ISAF) sent helicopters to the scene.

The cause of the crash is unknown and weather conditions were clear.
