A suicide bomb detonated at Moscow’s Domodedovo International Airport on Monday claiming at least 31 lives and injured another 130 people, Russian news agency RIA Novosti has reported. The blast is being classified a terrorist attack, a police source told the agency.
The bomb, equivalent to 11 pounds of TNT, was detonated in the crowded international arrivals hall at Moscow’s busiest airport, at 4:40 p.m. local time (8:40 a.m. EST), reports RIA Novosti. The death toll may still rise, with 20 people admitted to the hospital in serious condition, Russia’s health ministry announced, according to the agency.
“President Medvedev has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed in the explosion at Domodedovo Airport,” read a Twitter posting by the official Kremlin Twitter account, @KremlinRussia_E. A later tweet said that Medvedev had postponed his trip to the World Economic Forum, scheduled for Tuesday.
Domodedovo Airport is Russia’s busiest airport, with passenger traffic reaching over 18.6 million people in 2009.
