Britain and Japan issued on Monday travel alerts to continental Europe-bound travelers following the United States’ statement on potential terrorist threats in European countries coming from leaked al-Qaeda plans for attacks on the continent.

The cautions do not mention specific European countries because no concrete information is available.

“We have credible information that justified the alert, but it is not specific at this point,” State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters.

On Sunday, U.S. officials said that current information suggested that “al-Qaeda and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks.”

The alerts say that people should be vigilant when walking near government buildings, using public transportation, and visiting tourist attractions, which could be targets of possible terrorist attacks.

British officials have also issued an alert indicating a “high threat” of attacks in France and Germany.

U.S. officials said that they had decided to issue the alert because of a “cumulative analysis” that it was warranted.
