Moon explosion: A meteorite crashed into the Moon, creating what has been described as the largest explosion ever seen on the lunar surface.

The meteorite struck the Moon in March, causing an explosion that one could spot with their own eyes

The meteorite hit the Moon at 56,000 miles per hour, causing a crater 65 feet wide, NASA said. The meteorite weighed around 90 pounds and was more than a foot wide.

“On March 17, 2013, an object about the size of a small boulder hit the lunar surface in Mare Imbrium,” stated Bill Cooke with NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office. “It exploded in a flash nearly 10 times as bright as anything we’ve ever seen before.”

Cooke said that the Earth and Moon were hit by meteorites at the same time.

“My working hypothesis is that the two events are related, and that this constitutes a short duration cluster of material encountered by the Earth-Moon system,” he said.
