Betsy Hodges is the major front-runner in the mayoral election, according to early results on Tuesday. She will likely be elected to the city’s highest office.
The Star-Tribune reported that Hodges has a 10-point lead over second-place Mark Andrew. The paper said that 113 of 119 precincts have reported in.
The results won’t be released until Wednesday
She had nearly 36 percent of the vote and Andrew, the former Hennepin County commissioner, had 25 percent.
The city is using a process called “ranked choice voting,” which calls on voters in the election to rank first, second and third choices from 35 candidates. A winning candidate has to have more than 50 percent of the vote.
Mayor R.T. Rybak decided not to seek a third term sparked the a number of candidates to enter.
The “ranked choice voting” has done away with the normal primary election that would have narrowed the field of candidates.
