Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden’s wife Jill Biden made a surprise trip to Port-au-Prince, Haiti on April 13.

It was Mrs. Obama’s first official trip abroad without her husband.

Katie McCormick Lelyveld, press secretary to the first lady, said on the White House blog that the two took the trip to show how committed America remains to helping the people of Haiti.

She posted that the two wanted to “thank the women and men across the whole of the U.S. government for their extraordinary efforts in Haiti during the past three months and reach out to the U.N. and international relief communities in recognition of the truly global effort underway to help Haiti.”

The first lady will continue to Mexico, where she plans to stay three days.
