Public school cafeterias are losing money on the lunches that have been pushed by first lady Michelle Obama, according to a report.
A survey of food providers say the low-fat and low-salt meals are in “serious” condition and could be phased out, according to the Washington Examiner. As a result, the School Nutrition Association is planning to demand changes to make the lunches more attractive to students.
The lunches have drawn criticism from students, who have posted photos of their sorry-looking meals with the hashtag #thanksMichelleObama.
The School Nutrition Association found that 50.35 percent of cafeteria officials who were surveyed expect that serving the Obama-pushed food will “exceed revenue” in 2015.
“Of the 92 percent of respondents reporting that rising costs pose a ’serious’ or ’moderate‘ challenge to their programs, 70 percent indicated ’serious,’” the group said.
Following that, there are concerns that kids have been wasting food--mostly the fruit and vegetables required under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act.
The group said that since the healthier food has been required, more than 1 million students have stopped buying the meals. In all, the new requirements add up to about $1.2 billion in food and labor costs.
Meanwhile, a conservative newspaper focused on Obama’s daughters, Sasha and Malia, and what they eat.
According to the Daily Caller:
For Tuesday, Dec. 9, the scrumptious, bountiful lunch menu for both the middle school and the upper school at Sidwell Friends is:
Potato Sausage Soup; Firecracker Slaw; California Chef’s Salad; All Natural Jamaican Jerk Chicken Wings; Sweet Potato Black Bean Bake; Sautéed Local Greens; Gemelli Alfredo; Sliced Pineapple
This menu of completely free lunch items certainly sounds delicious and nutritious. Also, to be clear, it’s for a single day, not the entire week.
