Michelle Obama and Laura Bush, the respective current and former First Ladies, will speak at a ceremony marking the ninth anniversary of the United Airlines Flight 93 crash in Pennsylvania during the 9/11 attacks, announced the National Park Foundation on Monday.
Obama and Bush will join other speakers including Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar and Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell at Western Overlook, the future site of the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pa., to commemorate the 40 passengers and crew who lost their lives.
The flight from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco crashed into a field after the passengers and crew fought against four terrorists who hijacked the plane.
“We are deeply honored to welcome first lady Michelle Obama, Mrs. Laura Bush and all of our guests to this important event,” said Neil Mulholland, president and CEO of National Park Foundation.
“Their show of support honors the lives and memories of these 40 heroes and everyone we lost on September 11th, and serves as a valuable reminder of how important this memorial is to preserve and share their story.”
The memorial is currently under construction and is set to be completed by Sept. 11, 2011.
