NEW YORK—Miami Dolphins quarterback Pat White had to be carried off by medical personnel after a helmet-to-helmet impact left him unconscious on the field, during the Dolphins’ game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
While running for the sidelines on a quarterback keeper, White was hammered head-on by Pittsburgh cornerback Ike Taylor. The two players’ helmets collided, a type of impact which can lead to serious neck injuries.
The force of the hit silenced the crowd, and paramedics were swiftly summoned as White lay motionless on the field, surrounded by teammates and coaches.
As the paramedics attended to White, a group of Pittsburgh players knelt in a circle to pray for their fallen opponent.
After a tense wait, White began responding to questions and moving his limbs. Once he regained consciousness, he was carted off the field strapped to a backboard. White was later diagnosed with a concussion. He is reported to be recovering well.
Usually playing as a running back rather than quarterback, White was brought into the game after starting quarterback Chad Henne was sidelined by a blow to the head which blurred his vision.
Ike Taylor’s tackle, while extremely powerful, was not illegal because Taylor made no intentional effort to strike with his helmet.
