Prime Minister Stephen Harper met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday, Sept. 20.

Harper announced 28 new maternal, newborn, and child development projects over the next five years.

By 2016, the Canadian government will deploy $82 million to support projects across Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

Also on Tuesday, Harper said Canada does not support the Palestinian Authority’s new effort to get the UN to recognize it as a state. On Wednesday, he voiced support for Israel, saying that the best way to peace in the Middle East was through negotiations between Israel and Palestine.

NDP Foreign Affairs Critic Paul Dewar said his party is waiting to see the text of Palestine’s bid for statehood before taking a position.
