Manny Pacquiao has stayed silent in public about his upcoming fight against Chris Algieri, but his challenger has been happy to talk at length.
Algieri of Long Island, New York isn’t considered a formidable opponent by some boxing observers, and he has felt the need to defend his matchup with Pacquiao.
“At the end of the day, I know I proved to be where I am and that I should be here,” Algieri recently told Boxing Scene, referring to his win over Ruslan Provodnikov in June, without which he wouldn’t be facing Pacquiao.
Algieri recently said in an HBO interview: “I’m gonna be an entirely different fighter when I fight Manny Pacquiao. I’m different every time I fight and I train specifically for my opponent so we’re gonna have a perfect game plan for Manny.”
“I will use my conditioning to push the pace, the pace that he’s not used to at this point of his career and look to dominate down the stretch,” Algieri said about the November 22 bout.
While Pacquiao hasn’t discussed the upcoming matchup, longtime trainer Freddie Roach, who usually helps pick Pacman’s opponents, recently told Tha Boxing Voice that he wasn’t involved in picking Algieri.
““I have no idea why he picked that guy,” Roach said, referring to promoter Bob Arum choosing Algieri, “but he told me that he beat Ruslan, he’s a good fight for Manny and then that was it.”
