NEW YORK—Many guests were treated to a bountiful feast of homemade Malaysian specialties to mark the end of Ramadan at the Malaysian consulate this Sunday.
Consul General M.Zamruni Khalid and his wife greeted attendees, many of whom came dressed in traditional attire. Khalid said Ramadan is the biggest holiday in Malaysia and friends and family of all ethnic backgrounds are invited to celebrate and enjoy many delicious delicacies after the one month of fasting. Children will sometimes get a small amount of money as a gift, but Khalid emphasized that this is primarily a day about forgiveness.
During the festivities, Malaysian trade commissioner Wan Latiff announced that locals interested in experiencing more of Malaysian culture and the atmosphere of a bustling Kuala Lampur open air market will have a chance to do so this coming Tuesday.
The Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation will be hosting a Malaysian Night Market on Sept. 14 featuring Malaysian cuisine and cultural performances. The event will be held at Chelsea Triangle in the Meatpacking District on 14th Street and 9th Avenue. Eight different restaurants will offer food for sale giving locals a chance to experience Malaysian cuisine and culture.
“The ambiance will be exactly like the Night Market in Kuala Lampur,” said Latiff, referring to the largest city in Malaysia. “The objective is to introduce Malaysia through cuisine while promoting Malaysian restaurants.”
Malaysian dance performances will begin at 6:45 p.m. amidst the rich atmosphere and colorful lanterns.
“It will be a colorful event,” said Latiff, who plans to make the event a yearly celebration.
