Deposed Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro appeared in a Manhattan courtroom on Jan. 5, signifying his sharp descent into legal trouble after the United States captured him and his wife, Cilia Flores, during a surprise raid over the weekend.
Pleading not guilty, both Maduro and Flores maintained their innocence while describing themselves as president and first lady, respectively. “I’m innocent. I am not guilty. I am a decent man, the president of my country,” Maduro, 63, said.
