Canadian Senator Mac Harb resigned on Monday, saying that his ongoing dispute over repaying housing claims “made working effectively in the senate unrealistic,” according to a statement.

Harb had been fighting an order that he repay housing claims. He dropped the fight and paid $180,166, which brings the total he has paid to $231,649, reported the Globe and Mail.

He wasn’t fighting for the money, he said. The Senate “treated me very unfairly, and I wanted to make the point that every Canadian, even Senators, should be entitled to due process,” he said in the written statement.

He said he’s always followed senate rules on expenses and expense claims.
