Laura Elizabeth Whitehurst, a high school teacher in Southern California, was arrested this week for having a child with one of her students, it was reported. Another report on Wednesday said that another student claims he had a relationship with her several years ago in 2007.
Whitehurst, 28, is accused of giving birth to a baby with a 16-year-old, and she was arrested for having unlawful intercourse with a minor, local police said.
The mother of the student, who was not named, told authorities at Citrus Valley High School in Redlands, Calif., of the incident. They later contacted police.
A several-month-long investigation led to Whitehurst’s arrest--a few weeks after she gave birth, The Associated Press reported.
Whitehurst was released from jail after posting a $25,000 bond and is presently on administrative leave, the Daily Mail reported.
The relationship between Whitehurst and the student apparently lasted for a year. She gave birth on June 18.
KABC-7 television reported that another student, who is now 23, claimed he had a relationship with Whitehurst while he was 17.
“I didn’t know what to think at first. It was kind of a shock,” Michael Cooper told the station.
