Nation Brief
Assistant Attorney General Tony West of the Justice Department’s Civil Division said at a press conference that Maxim Healthcare Services, Inc. agreed to pay $130 million to settle charges of fraudulent billing in 42 states. He spoke in Newark, N.J., on Monday. The settlement “ represents the department’s largest civil recovery in a home health care fraud case ever,” said West in a statement.
The Department of Justice has recovered more than $8 billion in settlements of health care fraud cases since January 2009, according to an announcement from the agency.
Richard West, a patient of Maxim, got a notice that he was nearing the ceiling of his allowable benefits because of services Maxim had provided him. He had not received the services, and filed a whistle-blower lawsuit.
