HOUSTON—Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company performed its second show at Jones Hall with a great welcome from the Houston audience Thursday evening, Dec. 22.
Serbino Sandifer-Walker, a journalism professor at Texas Southern University, attended the performance with her husband, Mangus Walker, an engineer, and their daughter who studied dance.
“I loved it, it was very unique,” Mr. Walker said.
“I think it was wonderful. I think it’s extraordinary,” Mrs. Sandifer-Walker said. “What I’m most impressed with is how they have the inter-activity, the computerization between the dancers.”
Mr. Walker agreed, “Yes, the interaction with the live dancers and the set is incredible.”
Mrs. Sandifer-Walker was impressed with the vibrant coordination of the performance.
“I thought the costumes were very lovely, colorful, and bright. And I loved how the costumes also matched the scenery and the set. You could see the computer generated animation in the background matching the costumes as well, and I thought that was really nice,” Mrs. Sandifer-Walker said.
The New York-based company uses an animated, digital backdrop to depict heavenly scenes and vibrant settings to accompany the performances.
As a dancer trained in various styles, their daughter was impressed with the skill of the dancers.
“I think the dancers are really flexible and talented. They’re really skilled to do all those flips in the air,” she said.
“They exhibit extraordinary skill,” said Mrs. Sandifer-Walker. “I’m just really amazed at how acrobatic they are, how limber they are, how engaged they are with the audience too. Very precise, very professional.”
