Josh McDaniels was fired on Monday after the Denver Broncos fell to 3-9 on the season, the team’s website announced.

“Broncos Owner Pat Bowlen has relieved Josh McDaniels of his head coaching duties,” the statement on DenverBroncos.com read.

McDaniels was let go after he posted an 11-17 record with the Broncos over less than two seasons.

He was hired as Denver’s head coach in 2009 and, despite leading his team to six straight wins to start off last year, saw his Broncos fall to 8-8 and out of the playoffs.

McDaniels’ tenure was tarnished, and he apparently fell out of favor with the Broncos’ top brass, by a videotaping scandal earlier this year. The Broncos failed to promptly report that they had filmed a practice by the San Francisco 49ers, and McDaniels and the Broncos were each fined $50,000 by the NFL for the infraction.

Before his stint with the Broncos, he was under Bill Belichick’s tutelage in New England from 2001 to 2008. From 2006 to 2008, he was the Patriots’ Offensive Coordinator, overseeing an offense that set NFL records in touchdowns and points in 2007, the year the Patriots lost to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl.

According to the AP, the Broncos said they would schedule an official news conference for Tuesday. No interim head coach has been announced.
