The Peruvian justice department officially charged Joran van der Sloot with the robbery and murder of 21 year old Stephany Flores on Friday, Peruvian media is reporting.
Researchers at Peru’s National Bureau of Criminal Investigation had concluded that the murder was premeditated.
A previous confession by Van der Sloot, in which he claimed that he killed Flores in an act of anger after she had confronted him with his involvement in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, pointed at manslaughter which has a less severe punishment than the potential 35 years Van der Sloot is now facing.
According to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Van der Sloot had had his eye on Flores since May 14 and had stolen over 8100 Euros and credit cards from Flores after he allegedly saw her winning in poker in that period.
Van der Sloot has been moved to the Palace of Justice pending transfer to prison.
