A fire was reported on the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force missile destroyer Shimakaze, said the Coast Guard.
Voice of America correspondent Steve Herman reported on the incident but did not elaborate.
He also did not disclose where the destroyer was when the fire broke out.
It is unclear if there were any injuries.
