Kayak.com is trying to be the best and largest travel website. The problem is that it doesn’t sell you the tickets that it finds for you, like Orbitz or Travelocity, so it doesn’t have the name recognition that the ticket sellers enjoy. What it does have, though, is probably the best iPhone travel assistant app there is—if not the most feature packed.
The Kayak app is essentially a cut-down version of the Kayak.com website, with a few features that take advantage of the iPhone’s mobile features.
Like the website, the app helps you find the best prices for flights, hotels, and rental cars. Once you find a deal that you’re ready to pay for, the app transfers you to the vendor’s website.
You may or may not see an interface optimized for a mobile display at this point, so you’re probably better off using a regular computer to book your ticket or make your reservation. It’s still good for window-shopping, though.
Further augmenting the flight search function, it has a Buzz feature that keeps track of price trends so that you can see price changes over time. You can also set up alerts for when a fare comes within your price range.
At the airport, the Kayak app is still useful as it incorporates airport data from GateGuru.com to provide you with a map of the terminals and location of amenities. GateGuru has its own app, but it provides exactly the same information. You won’t need it unless you want to write a review.
You can also e-mail your itinerary to Kayak.com and it saves your trip info in the Trips section. It then keeps track of all the details of each leg of your trip. In the details section, you’ll find all of the information that you’ll ever need about your trip, and there are links to airport maps mentioned above.
Also useful is a link to the flight status that shows terminal and gate information as well as a map view of the location of your airplane, with speed and altitude data. The flight tracker can be used to look up any other flight that you’re curious about and provides essentially the same information as standalone flight tracker apps.
Other functions include a Beacon that you can use to e-mail your location with an integrated Google map, a Packing List, a currency converter, a list of airline phone numbers, and a schedule of airline fees.
Being a free app that is updated frequently with more and more useful features, Kayak replaces several other apps and may be the only travel assistant app that you’ll need on your next trip.
Kayak Flight, Hotel Search is free. An ad-free version is available for $0.99.
