Hurricane Irma slammed the tropical island of St. Maarten on Wednesday, Sept. 6, downing trees, tearing the roofs from homes and ripping through the Princess Juliana International Airport, which is world famous for airplanes landing over the heads of beachgoers.
Freelance photographer Eric de Bondt documented the damage inside and outside the airport terminal in a series of photos posted on Twitter.
The airport is famous because of its peculiar location right next to a beach. Dozens of spectacular photos of jumbo jets landing over the heads of beachgoers have circulated for the years.
