Hurricane Danielle has advanced to Category 4 with maximum sustained winds traveling at nearly 135 mph northwest, according to a National Hurricane Center advisory issued at 5 a.m. EDT.

Hurricane Danielle, located at about 545 miles southeast of Bermuda, is moving northwest at 12 mph. The hurricane is predicted to turn toward the north-northwest Friday night and turn toward the north Saturday. On this track, the center of Danielle should pass well east of Bermuda Saturday night.

Danielle advanced from Category 2 to Category 3 late Thursday night. It may have additional strengthening in the next 24 hours.

“Danielle has continued to intensify overnight with infrared imagery showing a distinct warm eye surrounded by a ring of very cold cloud tops,” read the advisory.

A Category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale can lead to catastrophic damage, according to the center.

Hurricane Charley in 2004 was an example of a hurricane that brought Category 4 winds and impacts to Punta Gorda’s coastal portions.

{etRelate 41698, 41679}Bermuda will see large waves and dangerous surf conditions in the next couple of days. The U.S. East Coast will experience swells from Danielle on Saturday, which may cause dangerous rip currents.

“Winds then strengthen tomorrow and into Sunday as Danielle moves by about 200 nautical miles (230 miles) to our east,” reads a Bermuda Weather Service forecast.
