NEW YORK—A protest outside the United Nations (U.N.) Wednesday called for member states to pay attention to the human rights crisis in China during their meetings on the global financial crisis. A group of Falun Gong practitioners gathered to speak out about the persecution that is nearing its 11th year in China. More than 3,400 practitioners have been verified tortured to death by authorities, yet many rights groups fear the number is vastly higher.
Local Falun Gong practitioner, Ben Larkman, said he has been practicing Falun Gong for about nine years and now has greatly reduced stress levels and no back pain.
“Falun Gong can really just be described in three words—truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance,” Larkman said. “For just trying to be good, kind people, they are being killed in China—not just a handful, but hundreds of thousands of people. We have stories coming out every day of them being tortured, killed, and labor camps.”
China Peace and Democracy Federation leader, Tang Boqiao, said things in China are deteriorating daily. More and more unrest and riots are happening as the Chinese people’s dissatisfaction spills over. “We’re going to see an explosion,” he said. “This explosion is going to profoundly change the course of Chinese history.”
