A pregnant teenager who was declared dead and put in a coffin started screaming a day after she was buried.
Footage shows grieving family members where Neysi Perez, 16, had been heard “banging and screaming.”
Relatives soon removed the girl’s corpse but medics weren’t able to revive her and she was later returned to the cemetery and reburied in the same mausoleum.
The bizarre situation started when Perez, who was three months pregnant, fell unconscious after going outside to use the toilet at her home in La Entrada in western Honduras.
Authorities believe she suffered a panic attack after hearing nearby gunfire.
When the teen started foaming at the mouth a local priest was summoned and tried to exorcise what he believed to be an evil spirit, but she soon became lifeless and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Perez was buried in the wedding dress she had recently worn to get married. But a day after the funeral, husband Rudy Gonzales heard banging and screams from inside the concrete tomb, so he urgently called family members and they broke through the concrete block tomb with a sledgehammer.
“I was heartbroken because my sweetheart had been taken so suddenly from me. I wanted to be near to her. As I put my hand on her grave I could hear noises inside. I heard banging, then I heard her voice. She was screaming for help,” he told Primer Impacto.
“It had already been a day since we buried her. I couldn’t believe it. I was ecstatic, full of hope.”
A cemetery worker said he also heard noises coming from the grave.
Perez was rushed to the hospital but medics couldn’t revive her.
“‘The whole family rushed in, almost breaking the door down, carrying the girl in her casket,” a doctor noted. “I told them to take her out and put her on the bed. Everybody was claiming she was alive so I went through all the necessary procedures. ’We evaluated and tried everything but the girl was dead. They put her back in the coffin and took her away again, back to the cemetery.”
The panic attack Perez initially suffered may have stopped her heart activity, and later she came to inside the coffin and tried to escape.
“Once we had taken her out of the tomb I put my hand on her body. She was still warm, and I felt a faint heart beat,” her cousin Carolina Perez said. “She had scratches on her forehead and bruises on her fingers. It looked like she had tried desperately to get out of the casket and hurt herself.”
