NEW YORK—Dr. Jill Gordon recently hosted a cocktail party for 2012 London Olympic hopeful Holly Payne. Holly Payne and Dr. Gordon’s horse Madeline (“Baby”) have qualified for four-star status in 2009, a must to try out for the United States Equestrian Team.

For the next three years, Holly will work in the U.S. and Europe at developing her equestrian art while maintaining the soundness and health of her equine partner.

Militaire

Three-day eventing was once known as “Militaire”. This comprehensive cavalry training requires mastery of different riding disciplines. The three phases are dressage, cross country, and show jumping.

Today, these tests are no less challenging. The three phases test the stamina and abilities of both horse and rider. Success is required in all three areas.

Dover Saddlery’s lovely new store in Branchburg, New Jersey was the site of the sponsors’ party. Today, a horse and rider combination requires sponsorship to cover the expenses of training for the Olympics.

This usually requires one to go to Europe for a lengthy stay to experience the training, riding, and showing environment there.

Bruce Davidson was scheduled to be the guest speaker. He is a four-time Olympic medalist. He has known Holly since she was riding on her pony. He was taken ill at the last moment and text-messaged his good wishes and support to Holly.

Holly is also a trainer and instructor, through FEI (Federation Equestre Internationale) levels and has trained many horses. Her students have competed with them successfully in different disciplines.

Holly’s mother, Marilyn Payne, is an international “S” level judge in eventing and dressage. She was also Holly’s first teacher.

Most of Holly’s students are also three-day event riders. This creates a strong, family-like support system.

All her students travel together, compete together, and cheer each other on. Holly has a talent for creating a team atmosphere where everyone feels like they play a role whether they compete or are supportive family. Getting involved fosters support and fun!
