Hernandez 'dead soldier' comments: Broadcaster Keith Hernandez called a broken bat a “dead soldier” during a New York Mets game on Memorial Day.
"Well, folks. That is a dead soldier right there, folks, laying on that infield dirt,” said Hernandez, who broadcasts for WPIX-TV, according to the New York Times.
The bat was broken after Mets player Daniel Murphy shattered his bat on a groundout.
“We’ll address the matter with Keith. It was an honest mistake and a poor choice of words,” a spokesperson with the broadcaster told the Times.
Hernandez in 2006 also drew fire when speaking about a female member of the Padres training staff.
“I won't say that women belong in the kitchen, but they don't belong in the dugout. ... You know I am only teasing. I love you gals out there — always have,” he said, according to Fox Sports.
