Henry Kissinger, a top aide to former Presidents Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon, issued a comment on President-elect Donald Trump, describing him as “most unique.”
“This president-elect, it’s the most unique that I have experienced in one respect. He has absolutely no baggage,” Kissinger told CNN. “He has no obligation to any particular group because he has become president on the basis of his own strategy.”
Kissinger, 93, met with Trump last week to discuss foreign policy.
He said voters shouldn’t expect Trump to maintain all his campaign promises.
“One should not insist on nailing him into positions that he had taken in the campaign, of which he doesn’t insist,” Kissinger said. “If he insists on them, then of course then disagreements will become expressed.”
He added: “I think we should give him (Trump) the opportunity to develop the positive objectives that he may have and discuss those. And we have come through too many decades of daring incompetent administrations apart and it may happen again. But we shouldn’t begin that way and shouldn’t end up that way either. That would be my basic view.”
Kissinger won a Nobel Peace Prize for his attempts to end the Vietnam War, which was handed to him under controversial circumstances.
According to a statement from Trump’s team, Kissinger and the president-elect spoke about many international issues. “President-elect Trump and Dr. Kissinger have known each other for years and had a great meeting. They discussed China, Russia, Iran, the EU and other events and issues around the world,” the statement read, according to the Economic Times.
