Police said that the gunman at the center of the hostage situation involving several firefighters was killed at a home in an Atlanta suburb, police spokesman Edwin Ritter told reporters, according to a live feed.

Reports said that police attempted to communicate with the gunman and attempted to give him food before he was killed. However, a firefight ensued between authorities and the man, who was not identified.

Four firefighters suffered superficial wounds and one officer was reportedly injured.

One big explosion followed by several smaller ones or gunshots have been heard in the Georgia neighborhood where a gunman is holding four firefighters hostage in a home.

At about 7:30 p.m. one explosion shook the area and authorities moved onlookers and media farther back in Suwanee, about 35 miles northeast of Atlanta. More blasts followed.

Authorities say five firefighters responded to the call in Suwanee and were eventually taken hostage by an unidentified. The gunman released one of the firefighters to move a fire truck.

Two ambulances were seen leaving the subdivision.

SWAT teams and hostage negotiators are on the scene.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
