Guinea-Bissau Prime Minister Carlos Gomes Jr. was placed under house arrest by soldiers from the West African nation’s army Thursday.
The move is believed to be an apparent coup by military leaders in the country, writes BBC. Several hundred Gomes people showed up at his house to lend their support.
The military came to his house at 8 a.m. Thursday and his Press Secretary Mamodou Djau said he has not been able to contact the prime minister. The leader of the military uprising, Antonio Indjai, said they would kill Gomes if the protests did not cease. He added that the uprising was not a coup but just a mistake. Last year, the coup-prone country saw the assassination of their then-President Joao Bernardo Vieira.
