Marvel scored another hit with Guardians of the Galaxy and fans are wondering what to expect in the sequel, which has been confirmed.

Director James Gunn has confirmed that the film will also explore the parents of Peter Quill.

“There have been a lot of documents passed around about who Peter Quill’s father is between a select two or three of us. That’s been part of the plan since the beginning, that’s something I had to work out before we shot the screenplay. We wanted to make sure Yondu’s place in everything made sense and it does, so it’s all very specific stuff,” Gunn told Empire magazine.

Quill’s father is J’son, the Emporer of the Spartoi Empire, but he‘ll actually be someone different in the movie. “It’s definitely not the character who it is in the comics, I’ll say that much,” Gunn said, also noting that it’s far from a sure thing that Thanos will appear in the sequel.

“He will show up [in the sequel] if he helps our story and he will not show up at all if not,” he said. “Thanos is not the most important thing in Guardians 2, that’s for damn sure. There’s the Guardians themselves and other threats the Guardians are going to be facing that are not Thanos.””

Meanwhile, while some concrete information has come out courtesy of Gunn and others, there’s lots more speculation about plot details.

Movie Pilot speculates that Thanos could claim the Power Stone while Rhomann Dey could come to Earth.

“The Power Stone - one of the key Infinity Gems that Thanos is looking to get hold of as he seeks to assemble the Infinity Gauntlet - played a key part in Guardians of the Galaxy. Star Lord attempted to steal it at the start of the movie, then Ronan the Accuser got his hands on it. At the end of the film, after the Guardians had managed to use the Power Stone to destroy Ronan, they give it to the Nova Corps for safe-keeping,” it said.

“Does that mean Rhomann Dey (John C. Riley) plays a key role in the comics, recruiting New Yorker Richard Rider to become Nova - with much talk of the Guardians of the Galaxy coming to Earth (or Iron Man going to space) is this the storyline that will connect the two sides of the Marvel Universe, and perhaps ensure collaboration in The Avengers 3?”
