Being ranked eighth in the NBA in the middle of March is nerve-wracking. A game at that point isn’t just a game; it’s a fierce battle, and every point has the potential to bolster chances for a post-season.

Ranked eighth in the West are the Memphis Grizzlies, and today ESPN reported the unfortunate news that Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay will miss the remainder of the season getting surgery on his injured left shoulder.

It should be noted that Gay missed the past 14 games, during which the Grizzlies have been 8-6, clinging on to eighth place. The view forward is less propitious—the Grizzlies face the Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls, and San Antonio Spurs for the rest of their season.

All you have to do is look at Gay’s numbers to see that this boy can play ball. He’s got a 19.8 PPG and 6.2 RPG.

Gay is not the only Grizzlies strength. Shane Battier is a lockdown defender, and Tony Allen and Leon Powe are dependable shooters when they hit their strides.

Still, you can’t deny that Gay is crucial and will be sorely missed should the Grizzlies make it to playoffs.
