Gmail went down on Friday afternoon, giving users a temporary error (500) message, but it appears to be working again now for most users.

Google said on its app center at 2:12 p.m. ET that “We’re investigating reports of an issue with Gmail. We will provide more information shortly.” It later said that customers were experiencing problems across North America and beyond.

Google+ was having problems as well.

Users across the world were panicking and also making jokes.

“Gmail is down. What if it never comes back? Would you prefer to just call people or - gasp - go back to Yahoo! Mail?” said Jeremy Goldman, a social media strategist, via Twitter.

“Can anyone help me? @google @gmail ? #gmaildown” said another user.

“#gmail is down. Thousands of programmers seen leaving their mother’s basements...” said another.
