German shepherd dogs, originally bred to herd sheep, are one of the most loyal and best guard dog breeds that will protect their master from harm till the very end. Their intelligence, courage, balanced temperament, and ability to follow instruction, coupled with their innate loyalty and protective instincts, made them a favorite breed for police and military work.

A few years ago in 2017, a robber had initially thought a house in Chesterfield, Virginia, was an easy target with the family away but soon realized just how wrong he was upon breaking in. A German shepherd was there guarding the home….

When the family returned to their Ashbrooke home that night on Aug. 10, 2017, they discovered a gruesome scene—the walls and floors of their home were marked with blood almost everywhere.

Tristan Murrin, who was the first person to discover the gruesome scene, told WRIC: “We didn’t see anything wrong nothing at the front door.”

They knew something was wrong as their German shepherd, named Oden, came out to greet them. “We noticed something when we walked in, when I walked in with my mother and there is blood spots on the ground, we looked up stairs and you see trails of blood coming from up stairs going all the way down,” he said.

Apparently, the family’s guard dog had dealt the would-be robber a serious lesson before the injured thief managed to escape, minus the loot.

The family said there have been several break-ins in their neighborhood, and this was the first time they had experienced it themselves. However, the intruder had picked the wrong house, thinking that no one was at home.

“My dog, he’s a pretty big dog, it’s a larger German shepherd,” Murrin said of his dog, but added that Oden is gentle towards children.

“He plays with the kids, the cul-de-sac knows him. They know him as big dog, the community loves him, the kids come up to him and want to touch him and play with him,” he said.

Speaking of how Oden handled the situation, Murrin said that he was glad his dog wasn’t hurt. “I think the dog did its job. He knew that someone was not supposed to be in my house and no one was home and he knows that he wasn’t supposed to be in there and he was doing something that he wasn’t supposed to be doing and so he knew to act upon it,” he said.

As for the robber, the family believed that the person required serious medical attention, judging from the trails of blood seen around the house.

Proud of his German shepherd, Murrin posted photos of the gruesome scene on his Facebook page, writing: “Last night we had a break in, luckily no one was home. My best friend Oden who is a German shepherd, protected my home and belongings when I wasn’t there, I couldn’t be more proud of him.”

Murrin was so pleased with the German shepherd that he urges everyone to consider buying or adopting a dog so as to keep the home safe. “Such an amazing breed that’s why everyone who doesn’t have an actual dog should consider on adopting or buying a dog,” he remarked.

Nothing was stolen in the house thanks to the loyal and courageous Oden! Would you consider keeping a German shepherd as a pet?
