There’s been rumors that George Clooney, who recently married Amal Alamuddin, purchased a small private island with a mansion near London.
The two apparently purchased the “Aberdash House” located on a private, 5.5-acre island on Sonning-on-Thames about 35 miles from London, according to Variety magazine.
The private island is accessible by a watercraft or a small wooden bridge that’s located behind security gates. A listing in the Wall Street Journal valued the property at about £7.5 million ($12.1 million).
The property was sold by banker Omar Bayoumi, who bought the island years ago.
The 17th century estate is 9,000 square feet in size with 10 bedrooms.
“Stone terraces off the south facing rooms cascade down wide stone steps to a flat, soccer pitch sized lawn sprinkled with and surrounded by mature specimen trees — Redwoods, Pines, Walnut, Willows and Magnolias, according to listing details. The lawn and gardens are fully lit and irrigated with a comprehensive automated system and the property additionally includes a raised vegetable garden, a double greenhouse with automated ventilation,” writes Variety’s Mark David in the piece.
And according to reports on Monday, Alamuddin (who now uses Clooney’s last name) has gone back to work as a human rights attorney, heading to Athens to advise the Greek government on the 2,500-year-old “Elgin Marbles.”
“Mr Robertson and Mrs Clooney were first asked to provide legal advice to the Greek government on this matter in 2011. They will be holding a series of meetings with government officials during their stay,” reads a statement via the Ekathimerini website.
George Clooney earlier this year said that the UK government should hand back the sculptures to Greece.
“I think you have a very good case to make about your artifacts,” he said, per People magazine. “It would be a very fair and nice thing to do.”
