Two out of every three French voters would adopt Wallonie, the French speaking part of northern neighbor Belgium, if the country ever divided, according to a poll published by France-Soir newspaper on Thursday.
Belgium holds elections on June 13, and the difference between Flanders and Wallonie is an important topic.
The number of French voters who said they would welcome Wallonie as a part of France is 12 percent higher than a similar toll taken three years ago. Most supporters of the concept live in Northern France.
The results may be valuable to Belgian voters. Belgian media reported Wednesday that Bart de Wever, chair of the leading party, the New Flemish Alliance (N-VA), said a victory would not bring chaos to the country as “We don’t want a revolution, but a soft evolution.” N-VA, is estimated to receive 26 percent of the votes, and strives to “bring Flanders to a balanced budget in an accelerated pace.”
Flanders, to the north, has 6 million Dutch-speaking citizens and Wallonie, to the south, has 4.5 million French-speaking citizens.
The difference between Wallonie and Flanders is not just in the French or Dutch language but also in their economy and cultural.
