Former Venezuelan President Carlos Andrés Pérez died on Christmas Day at the age of 88. Pérez died of heart attack in a hospital in Miami.
“He got up fine in the morning. He was very eloquent, happy, but all of a sudden he couldn’t breath,” his daughter told the Associated Press.
Pérez was president from 1974 to 1979 and again from 1989 to 1993. During his first term he directed the nationalization of the country’s oil industry. In 1992 during his second term, he maintained control through two coup attempts, the first of which was led by Hugo Chavez.
Pérez was impeached for corruption in 1993 and later found guilty of misusing public funds.
