Social networking phenomena Facebook is now ahead of search engine giant Google for the first time, according to statistics from Hitwise.
The social networking giant has long surpassed social web competitor MySpace in popularity and total number of registered users, and the latest numbers indicate that it is the most sought after property in cyberspace.
On March 13th, Hitwise, which measures Internet usage using a variety of metrics, published weekly statistics that indicated that Facebook was leading the race in Internet pageviews, claiming 7.07% percent of the world’s Internet visits versus Google’s 7.03%. Hitwise also reported that Facebook has experienced a 185% increase in usage since March 2009, while Google, at the same time, grew less than ten percent.
Google has not made an official response to the issue and some experts say that it is a short term phenomenon.
Founded in February 2004, Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerburg and some of his classmates at Harvard University. Initially membership on the social networking site was limited to students attending Ivy League colleges in the United States and Stanford. It was eventually opened up to any person in the world over the age of 13.
Facebook is free of charge and available all over the world excluding China, Iran, and Vietnam and countries where the regimes are still controlling the Internet.
