ExxonMobil, which sponsors the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup series, announced a multiyear expansion of the Porsche partnership including sponsoring the factory’s 2014 LMP1 endurance racer.
Porsche and ExxonMobil have been partners since 1996, when Porsche named Mobil 1 synthetic oil the recommended lubricant for Porsche products.
For 2014 Porsche will return to the top level of worldwide endurance racing, building a car for the World Endurance Championship and the Le Mans 24. The famous German manufacturer has not contested the top class at Le Mans in this century.
Porsche has a long and very successful history in endurance racing, including more Le Mans 24 wins than any other manufacturer. The factory’s 2014 offering will carry sponsorship form one of the wealthiest corporations ever.
Porsche will face challenges from Audi, which trails Porsche by only four Le Mans wins with 11 and Toyota, which has never won the around-the-clock race but whose current car is a close competitor with the current Audi.
