In a world that increasingly focuses on the negative, The Epoch Times seeks to shine a light on the positive.
This year, we held the “Inspiring the World Journalism Competition“ to invite writers to submit stories of compassion, redemption, and triumph. We received hundreds of submissions, which were judged based on editorial merit and popularity on social media.
We are excited to announce the first-place winner, earning a $5,000 prize, is Nicole Lowe, for her story “Drug-Addicted Vagrant to Assistant Attorney General.”

Lowe is the author of “Never Let Me Go: A Memoir,” which tells her life’s story in full. She is now an assistant attorney general for the state of Utah and program director of the Volunteers of America Utah’s Homeless Youth Legal Clinic. She regularly speaks to at-risk teens about overcoming the challenges in their lives, as she overcame the challenges in hers.
We also congratulate our second- and third-prize winners:
The second prize, for $3,000, goes to Tara Denholm-Smith, for “The Year You Didn’t Break Me.”
Denholm-Smith is a commercial writer and the founder of Composing Copy LLP. She works between her home in Spain and her office in London. She lives with her two children and in her spare time, she writes for local press, drinks too much coffee, and collects stray cats.
The third prize, for $1,500, goes to Kimberlee Koehn, for “A Lesson in Love From Inside a Nursing Home.” Koehn writes a humor and lifestyle blog, Kimberlee K., from her home in Los Angeles, where she feeds her passion for telling stories and spreading positivity.
Honorable Mentions, for $200 each, were awarded to:
* Roshan Radhakrishnan, for “A Real Angel in the White House.”
* Rafael Luis Azevedo, for “The Brazilian Blind Boss.”
* Christy Heitger-Ewing, for “Girls’ Nite In: Avon Woman Creates a Program to Enlighten and Empower Teen Girls.”
