Emmett Pearson, a Minnesota Vikings fan who refused to shave his beard unless the Vikings won a Super Bowl, died this week.
Pearson, who passed away at age 83, had vowed almost 39 years ago not to shave until the Vikings won the big game.
He began growing the beard after the Vikings lost in the championship to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1975.
Three of his children never saw him clean-shaven.
Pearson was born on July 26, 1930 in Reg Wing, and graduated from the University of Minnesota.
He and his wife Rosann Bergquist bought his uncle’s farm.
“Many will remember Emmett for his unforgettable beard, something that he’s had since 1975 when the Vikings lost the super bowl to the Steelers,” according to his obituary. “A staunch Vikings fan, the beard was not coming off until the Vikings won a super bowl. Needless to say, Emmett died having never shaved his beard. More than the Vikings, farming and education, his family was most important to Emmett and he loved them dearly.”
He’s survived by his wife, five children,13 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and three brothers.
A funeral was being held for him today, Oct. 25.
