Elizabeth Edwards, the estranged wife of former Sen. John Edwards, says that her breast cancer is spreading and has stopped her treatment as per her doctor’s recommendations, People magazine reported on Monday.
“Elizabeth has been advised by her doctors that further treatment of her cancer would be unproductive,” Edwards’s family told the celebrity magazine in a statement. “She is resting at home with family and friends.”
Edwards was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 and has recently relapsed despite cancer treatments, with the tumor spreading to her liver. She posted a message to friends on social networking site Facebook in a tearful thank-you note.
“I have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces—my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope,” she wrote in a Facebook message to friends, according to People magazine. “These graces have carried me through difficult times and they have brought more joy to the good times than I ever could have imagined. The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that.”
Edwards, 61, is spending time with her family in Chapel Hill, N.C. and told those close to her how appreciate she was of their love and support.
“It isn’t possible to put into words the love and gratitude I feel to everyone who has and continues to support and inspire me every day,” Edwards continues in her message. “To you I simply say: you know. With love, Elizabeth.”
On several Facebook pages dedicated to her, her followers said their condolences to Edwards.
“You are truly inspiring and a role model not only for your beautiful children, but for everyone in this country,” a user said on one of the pages dedicated to her. “You have made this world a better place - peace to you and your family.”
