Evidence of DNA damage from wireless electromagnetic radiation has been documented since 1995, when a study by Henry Lai and Narendra Singh reported single strand DNA breaks in cultured rat brain cells exposed to low intensity microwave/Wifi radiation.  In 2004, radiation from 2G cell phone handsets was found to cause both single and double stranded breaks in the DNA of cultured human and animal cells. Other studies have also indicated DNA damage from EMFs, including the government-funded National Toxicology Program study from 2018, which suggested clear evidence of DNA damage and cancer in rats.

This damage is thought to be caused by the cascade of effects from excessive signaling of the body’s voltage-gated calcium channels, generating free radicals like reactive oxygen species that cause unhealthy oxidative stress, which can result in DNA damage.

Free radicals trigger a vicious cycle, where each free radical self-propagates, continuing the cycle of damage until it encounters an antioxidant of some kind, which halts the process.

Antioxidants Help

Most types of antioxidants come from our diets, but one of the most protective antioxidants made endogenously (from within the body) is melatonin. Since melatonin production itself is inhibited by EMFs, we are then left with much less protection from this free radical damage, also caused by EMFs.

Cell and DNA damage from non-ionizing radiation may be a lot more similar to how damage from ionizing radiation (like gamma rays and x-rays) is inflicted than previously thought.

Whereas ionizing radiation directly damages DNA via ionization, or splitting atoms, the effects of non-ionizing radiation are indirect and moderated by free radicals. The free radicals generated by both ionizing and non-ionizing radiation can damage cell membranes and cause DNA fragmentation, which can result in cell death.

If DNA fragmentation becomes widespread in an organism, it can result in cancer. In the process of DNA destruction, essential genes that control cell division can be damaged or lost, causing cells to mutate because they lack proper instruction for their division.

Prominent studies have linked EMFs to various forms of cancer, summarized by several meta-analyses including this study review, and this one. The most common types include brain cancer (especially on the side of the head where the person holds their cell phone), schwannomas of the heart, and cancers in the neck such as the parotid salivary gland and the thyroid. Glioma, a form of brain cancer that has been linked to EMF exposure, is particularly deadly.
EMFs are also linked to breast cancer, prostate cancer, ovarian cancer and melanomas. A lot of this is thought to be related to how EMFs suppress melatonin production.

Melatonin’s Role

Most people think of melatonin as the “sleep hormone,” but it’s vastly more than that. Melatonin does help you have deep, restful sleep, which allows your cells to rejuvenate and your immune system to restore itself, in itself very important for cancer prevention.
Melatonin can also significantly increase the ability of vitamin D to stop tumor growth—by 20 to 100 times. As stated above, melatonin is a powerful antioxidant capable of destroying free radicals, such as the ROS that is produced as a result of EMF exposure.

EMF Protection

EMF protection should be approached from several angles. Minimizing EMF exposure sources (much as possible and practical) is the best first step. Optimizing your melatonin levels could also help to ensure your body has enough of this precious and potent super antioxidant to protect your cells from damage. A nutrient-rich, clean diet with abundant sources of antioxidants (such as vitamin C and E, polyphenols and flavonoids) will assist the body in neutralizing oxidative stress from EMF exposure.
In addition to the nutritional strategies listed above, effective EMF protection is a must, to protect you from the EMF exposure sources you cannot control.  Blushield EMF protection technology has demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in the function of the body’s voltage-gated calcium channels, in an independent review board certified, peer reviewed and PubMed indexed clinical study.  VGCC dysregulation is considered to be the primary upstream mechanism of oxidative stress and DNA damage from EMFs.
This unique EMF protection technology has also been clinically demonstrated to improve a wide variety of health markers, including cognitive function, blood glucose levels, sleep quality and heart rate variability.
