Doug de Grood is the father of Calgary stabbing suspect Matt de Grood, who is believed to have killed five people early Tuesday morning at a party near the University of Calgary campus.
Doug de Grood is a 33-year-old veteran of the Calgary Police Force.
According to Doug’s LinkedIn page, Doug is a senior police officer who has experience with a variety of front line policing operations, such as patrol, beats, traffic enforcement, and mountain bike patrol.
He sought out a promotion and was elevated to supervising teams of front line supervisors as a sergeant.
He later transitioned to a detective in general investigations.
Later, he was promoted to inspector and commanded a policing district.

Doug is a member of the Canadian Institute of Management and a member of the Alberta Community Crime Prevention Association.
He attended and graduated from the University of Calgary, like his son.
Calgary Police Services Chief Rick Hanson said at an afternoon news conference that Doug and his wife have expressed sorrow over the tragedy.
“He is absolutely devastated, and asked if I would pass on [that] he’s heartbroken, as his wife is,” the chief told a press conference.
“He said, ‘Could you please pass on to the families our total and complete sorrow and condolences as to what happened.’”
