NEW YORK—Specialty foods, handmade soaps and candles, and jewelry boutiques were on display at the Dekalb Market 2012 Spring Weekender launch event Saturday and Sunday. About one square block in Downtown Brooklyn, the Dekalb Market is a community market encircled by shops made out of salvaged shipping containers.

“We’ve got a lot of really good, exciting energy,” said Joann Kim-Nunez, one of the event producers. On any given weekday, shoppers can find 40 retail and 20 food shops, and different popup shops on the weekends.

“It’s an outdoor multisensorial experience. We’ve got food, retail shopping, eating, drinking, live music, [and] dance. It’s really an all around experience and you can look forward to that seven days a week this year,” Kim-Nunez said.
