The deep-sea exploration vessel Nautilus has stumbled upon and recorded a number of very interesting sea creatures thus far.

The team was recently exploring the Kick ‘em Jenny submarine volcano near Grenada when they spotted something slowly moving through the water.

As the vessel got closer to the creature, the crew started speculating what it could be before concluding it is a Chimaera. They are often referred to as ‘ghost sharks’.

Chimaeras are related to rays, sharks and skates. They’re pretty distinguishable due to the unusual appearance, specifically something that resembles a club on their snouts.

The eyes are often green in color and set higher up on the head. It’s believed the ghost shark in this case had parasites.

Before the Chimaera got out of sight, it turned towards the vessel, allowing the researchers to see the entire face, teeth and all. That made it look like the ghost shark was smiling at them.
