Deep Dive (March 9): DHS Chief Asks for Help With ‘Overwhelming’ Surge at Southern Border

|Updated:

The third stimulus checks could be coming soon. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) says the House will take up the Senate’s version of President Joe Biden’s nearly $2 trillion relief package by Wednesday. If the House approves it, it will make its way to Biden’s desk to be signed into law. Tax experts say, once Biden signs it, the government should be able to send out the $1,400 checks almost immediately.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is asking for help as President Biden denies there is a crisis. DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas sent an email to his staff asking them to assist at the border. Mayorkas wrote: “You have likely seen the news about the overwhelming numbers of migrants seeking access to this country along the Southwest Border.”
