Deep Dive (Aug. 3): NY Mayor to Mandate Vaccine Pass for Indoor Activities

|Updated:

New York City will become the first American city to require proof of COVID-19 vaccination for a variety of activities. Mayor Bill de Blasio said the rule will apply to indoor dining, gyms, and performances—and for both workers and customers. He said, “The key to NYC pass will be a first-in-the-nation approach. It will require vaccination for workers and customers in indoor dining, in indoor fitness facilities, indoor entertainment facilities. This is going to be a requirement.” Patrons will not have to be fully vaccinated. They will be required to prove they have received at least one dose. The mandate goes into effect on Aug. 16.

The largest U.S. organization of physicians and medical students is coming under fire for suggesting that birth certificates shouldn’t specify sex. The American Medical Association (AMA) Board of Trustees adopted the proposal, claiming sex designation on the public portions of birth certificates involves the potential for discrimination. But not everyone is on board with the proposal. Feminist activist Rachel Moran wrote on Twitter: “Who gains if biological reality is erased from birth certificates, and who loses? This is the most serious assault on women’s dignity and autonomy I have ever seen in my life.”
